AXA UK&I CDAO Objectives

AXA’s UK & Ireland Chief Data & AI Officer (CDAO) Paul Hollands and Head of Data and AI Strategy and Culture, Cali Woods are building a culture of innovation and collaboration by leveraging GenAI across their data teams in its central function, Health, Retail and Commercial divisions.

Leveraging AXA’s in-house GenAI solution already available within the organisation, the CDAO wanted to identify applications for GenAI in day-to-day tasks in order to increase productivity, while ensuring employees have the right skills and are comfortable using the necessary tooling.

The CDAO engaged Capco as AXA’s partner to deliver a one-day ‘Promptathon’ training session for 200 data professionals to achieve those goals.

Capco and AXA designed use cases to ensure relevance and practical application for day-to-day tasks.

What is a Promptathon?

Promptathons are Capco-developed events that focus on GenAI upskilling and engagement for employees. They are centred around exploring, designing, and improving prompts to optimise the utility and accuracy of AI models – a vital step on the path to successful GenAI adoption.

Prompt Engineering is a critical skill that individuals in every role need if they are to maximise the benefits offered by the AI tooling we now see organisations deploying at scale.

The Promptathon sessions allow employees to explore relevant use cases and approaches in a supported environment using safe, enterprise-approved tooling.

Collaboration with the Client to Plan the Event

A visual representation of the collaboration process with the client to plan a hackathon event. The process is shown as a timeline with two curved pathways, each containing steps with corresponding icons. The first pathway (purple) includes: Deciding the Theme - Identify and define a relevant and engaging theme. Objectives and Goals - Set clear and achievable objectives. Forming the Organizing Team - Assemble a dedicated team to manage logistics. Inviting Participants - Send invitations to attract a diverse group. Securing Resources and Venue - Arrange necessary resources and venue. The second pathway (blue) includes: 6. Pre-Promptathon Engagement - Provide pre-event materials and tutorials. 7. Sandbox Environment - Test sandbox environments to ensure participant access. 8. Promptathon Day - Participants engage in coding and problem-solving. 9. Solution Presentations and Judging - Teams present solutions for evaluation. 10. Post-Promptathon - Analyze solutions to identify viable projects for implementation. Each step is accompanied by a relevant icon, illustrating its function, and the layout follows a structured flow to guide users through the event planning process.

The session offered a choice of four use cases, identified by Capco and AXA in advance to ensure they would be relevant both to the organisation and the employees in the room. The focus was on real world practical applications so that attendees could come away from the Promptathon with tangible learnings.

Each use case was tackled in AXA’s SecureGPT, their in house secure GenAI solution, using the front end or for those more technical building on their API access.

  1. Automated Document Summarisation
Saves time and improves productivity by quickly condensing large volumes of information into actionable insights.
  2. Entity Recognition for Key Information Extraction
Boosts efficiency in document processing by automating categorization and retrieval of critical data. Reduces manual effort and errors, enabling faster and more reliable information access.
  3. Chain of Thought for Complex Decision Making
Facilitates structured reasoning for complex scenarios, leading to more logical and informed decisions.
  4. Sentiment Analysis.
Provides insights into customer sentiment, enabling personalized engagement and proactive issue resolution.

Training was delivered to all attendees in advance of the day to ensure everyone had a common baselined understanding how the technology we’d be leveraging from prompt engineering basics to API engineering.

This training aligned with the purpose of the event around data and AI upskilling of the AXA workforce.

"Building a culture of innovation: Upskilling data teams to unlock productivity and eliminate inefficiencies."

On the day

The event was run at an offsite location to ensure employees were truly focused on the tasks at hand.

Teams were made up of 10 individuals with mixed skills and experience levels to represent the nature of real world delivery teams, encourage cross-organisation collaboration, and create the right learning environment.

Roles ranged from Data Analysts to Project Managers and included both those who had used GenAI tooling personally and professionally as well as those trying the technology for the first time.

Each team was supported by a Capco AI subject matter expert, who acted as a facilitator to help guide team members through their tasks while also sharing their wide experience to optimise the learning experience.

To ensure that both the use cases and associated data were relevant, Capco’s AI Lab developed synthetic data sets for the challenge – ensuring that high quality, relevant and representative data inputs, and thus insights, were generated from the day.

Each team preselected their use case and data set, and then on the day addressed the following tasks:

  • Understand the use case and data in detail
  • Set clear objectives, project plan and timelines
  • Develop prompts to achieve the desired outcomes; iterate and build on the prompts to improve the quality over time
  • Develop a working prototype or solution that solves the challenge at hand and generates valuable insights for the organisation.

The teams also prepared to present back to the audience, with a focus on business impact, technical excellence and out of the box thinking.

Benefits of the Promptathon session

  • AI Literacy – helped employees understand how AI technology works, from prompting and token limits through to where it can be used in a relevant and valuable way
  • Upskilling – educated AXA’s data professionals in interrogating their in-house tooling & instilling an experimentation mindset in a short period of time
  • Community – Instilled a spirit of communal experimentation
  • Networking – Brought together all AXA’s data professionals under one roof for the first time.

Reflections from AXA’s UK&I CDAO

  • One of the most collaborative events in which the AXA Data team has participated, exciting to see employees from different teams and with varied skillsets learning together and sharing to tackle unique problem sets.
  • Ambition to repeat the exercise more regularly – positive feedback from employees when they realised how quickly they can learn to adopt AI to eliminate inefficiencies in their day jobs
  • Next event to include business professionals to foster tighter collaboration between AXA’s data and business teams.
