Out with the old and in with the new and improved. That was the goal of a leading international bank. They wanted to simplify their architecture landscape by retiring their old systems and strengthening the remaining core platforms. Enter Capco.
We were asked to determine the application rationalization business case and initiate a program to meet our client's needs. So what did we do? We went back to the beginning.
- We reviewed the pre-existing architecture documentation and had a series of workshops with management.
- We captured key attributes of current systems, confirmed primary IT ownership, and mapped each application to the functional model.
- We constructed a reliable application current-state landscape model using Capco’s Edge tool, which identified gaps in the application and confirmed whether the system should be retired, outsourced, or kept in-house.
- We developed an application catalogue and current-state architecture landscape that mapped each system to its function.
- We analyzed system functionality, identified clusters of systems that shared the same function, and illustrated the current set of systems that could migrate onto a smaller set of common platforms.
- We developed an end-to-end IT process to create business cases for system retirement and track approved business cases through to implementation and closure.
- We assessed, strengthened, and confirmed the relationship between organization and application to drive the decommissioning and help our client realize its cost savings.
