For the annual Transgender Day of Visibility, our Capco colleagues offer their perspectives on allyship and peers’ support in the workplace.

Being an ally to ensure inclusivity for transgender employees starts with acknowledging that the experience of trans colleagues is different, whether in a workplace or a social setting.

It can be hard to appreciate just how different that experience is, especially when not everybody who identifies as a transgender feel safe bringing their full selves to work. As colleagues, we must acknowledge this apprehension about being themselves at work, and not gaslight their lived experiences.

At the individual level, allyship for transgender colleagues might include:

  • Respectful interactions and using the correct pronoun
  • Avoiding making assumptions about transgender people's experience
  • Refraining from invasive inquiries about personal experiences or specifics around transitioning.

It may not always be easy to embrace what we are unaware of – but we are all learning, and a little goes a long way.

In my journey as an ally, I've faced challenges in understanding and supporting my trans colleagues. It requires a commitment to overcoming misconceptions, actively learning about their experiences, and being sensitive to the nuances of gender identity and expression.

I recommend prioritising active listening and continuous personal education. In my day-to-day actions, I practice trans inclusion by fostering a supportive atmosphere. While I may not be directly responsible for implementing policies, I contribute by being a vocal advocate for inclusivity, promoting understanding among colleagues, and fostering an environment where everyone – regardless of gender identity – feels genuinely supported.

Unconscious biases often revolve around traditional gender norms and stereotypes. To make the workplace truly trans inclusive, I actively work on recognising and challenging these biases within myself. This involves fostering open conversations, seeking education, and being mindful of the diverse experiences that contribute to a more inclusive atmosphere.

I strive to foster a trans inclusive environment by embracing diversity in its entirety. I advocate for inclusive policies, engage in awareness campaigns. This approach looks to create a workplace where every individual, regardless of their gender identity, feels not just acknowledged but genuinely valued and respected.
