Is upcoming legislation an opportunity or threat to the Swiss financial industry? The move to a fully sustainable economy in Europe has been taken up by the European Commission. It is known as the “European Green Deal,” Europe’s single largest multiple decade project. The objective is to transform the European economy into environmental and social sustainability. Europe is to be the first climate neutral continent by 2050. For this purpose, the European Green Deal investment plan will mobilize at least EUR 1 trillion of sustainable investments for decades to come and the financial markets will be its conduit!

Specifically, “Financing Sustainable Growth” is a key stream of the European Green Deal and the corresponding “EU Action Plan” triggers the legislative backbone in the financial services industry.
Sustainable finance ( Commission action plan on financing sustainable growth adopted in March 2018) is part of European Commission strategy to integrate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations into its financial policy framework and a work stream aimed at supporting the European Green Deal. When it comes to sustainable finance, Switzerland is very well positioned as highlighted by Swiss Bankers Association (SBA) in its June position paper: “The Swiss financial centre is a frontrunner in sustainable finance and is on course to become a premier international hub in this area.”
